Spinning Reels

Lets talk a little bit about our spinning reels. There is a common misconception that spinning reels need no maintenance to provide us with hours of pleasure. Let's look a little closer. Older model reels didn't have ball bearings, they only used bushings or in the very inexpensive models shafts rode directly on the casting. In most cases the rotor was not balanced, creating the familiar thump, thump, thump when you were reeling in your line. When the lube dries up or is contaminated with worn bushing or aluminum casting residue and occasional water or worst case mud, the effort required to crank that reel becomes greater and greater. Add to that the thump factor from the out of balance rotor and you have pretty much degraded your fishing enjoyment. Even the high end fishing rods are of little value due to the effort and vibrations being sent from the reel.

The later model reels, especially those with ball bearings have been improved to provide much smoother operation which will result in less vibration and effort required when reeling. Rotor balance has been improved and the result is a great reduction in the transmission of those annoying vibrations to the rod. Line twist is also being addressed with the addition of a bearing added to the bail of many spinning reels.

This bearing is especially vulnerable due to the fact that any water remaining on the line when retrieved will most likely be wiped onto this assembly. This bearing should see regular lubrication with a fairly thin oil. We don't want to slow it down with a heavy oil or we will defeat its purpose.

These improvements do come with a requirement of proper cleaning and lubrication to insure your continued pleasure. With a properly maintained reel you will experience greater 'feel' through your rod because the reel will not be generating its own set of vibrations or distractions to your rod.

Beyond the regular maintenance of your reel some choose to upgrade their gear by replacing the factory drag washers and upgrading the factory bearings to decrease friction and improve performance and reliability.  Whether you have hooked a big steelhead, catfish or muskie on your spinning gear you don’t want to lose it for lack of a little fresh grease and oil…     home
